LAYERS OF BEING
Layers of Being, a collaboration with Kin Johnson, is a mixed-media portrait series that celebrates queerness, affirmations, and the power of vulnerability. Created for the June Pride Group Exhibition hosted by The Cathedral and ATX Gals, the work layers with abstract painting and text. Each piece becomes a reflection of queer identity: joyful and complex. These pieces are not only visual representations of the queer community, but are spaces in which the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual experiences of being queer can exist.
The subjects in these pieces wrote notes that honored their relationships to their bodies; documenting the ways in which those relationships are ever evolving. These words are woven between abstract shapes and figures, which become physical manifestations of the emotions that these words carry.
Created for the June 2025 Pride exhibition, this collection is both a love letter and a mirror to queer experiences; reflecting the beauty and complexity of queer existence. It is a celebration of queer existence and the radical power of vulnerability. Layers of Being invites viewers to consider how language and emotions are intertwined. It reminds us that vulnerability and affirmation - both given and received - is a vital act of connection to self and others.
