BAPTIZED IN SILENCE
This project looks at how mid-20th century white America is often remembered in an overly positive way. I combine family photos from that time with images of Jim Crow-era violence to show the reality that was happening alongside everyday life. Hymns in the background point to the role of religion and how it was sometimes used to ignore or justify injustice. The work highlights the gap between what people chose to see and what they chose to ignore. It asks viewers to rethink nostalgia and face the harder parts of American history.
